ALSA Evidence Crawl - Edmonton
This is a one-day hands-on field course guided by Scott Westlund, ALS. This course will be very informative for all ALSs but is specifically targeted for ALSs with up to ten years experience. Articled students are welcome to attend with their principal.

On the tour, we will visit several different types of monuments to discuss monument identification, evidence evaluation, restoration, field notes, searching techniques and Bulletin 38. We will also equip you with the tools you need to set up a similar tour for your field staff and/or clients.

We will be driving between monuments but there is some walking involved. Please wear sturdy footwear and weather appropriate clothing (we will go on the tour rain or shine). A bag lunch, water and snacks will be provided.

Due to limitations on the number of people allowed in the vehicle, a maximum of ten people can attend per day.

You will want to attend this tour if:
  • You would like to look at survey monuments that you might not have seen.
  • You are interested in learning about monument identification, restoration, evidence evaluation and searching techniques and how better evidence assessment can help us avoid boundary uncertainties.
  • You want to set up a similar tour for your field staff and are looking for a template to follow.
  • You want some suggestions for how to get field staff to record better information in your field notes.
  • You are interested in how monuments are shown on legal plans and how more information might assist everyone.
  • You are interested in how boundary uncertainties are created/resolved by restoring monuments.
  • You would like to spend a relaxing day in the field with other ALSs.

The van departs at 9:00 a.m. each day. Please meet in the parking lot east of the Petro Canada gas station and west of the Rona just south of the intersection of 97th Street and 167th Avenue in north Edmonton (53° 37' 32.2” N, 113° 29' 24.6” W). There should be sufficient space for everyone to park here but carpooling is encouraged. We should be back at the parking area around 3:00 p.m.

Please note that, depending on feedback and interest in the tour, similar tours may be offered in other locations in the future. Also, as space is limited, the dates can be expanded, if necessary. Please contact Scott Westlund for more information.

Single and multiple registrations can be completed on the ALSA website under Events. You must be logged into the website to register. Please contact Kerry Barrett at barrett@alsa.ab.ca if you require assistance.
