ALSA Professional Development Seminar

Use of LIDAR to Support Land Surveying Projects Seminar
LIDAR data has been steadily evolving from an exotic product used by bleeding-edge GIS planning-types into an accessible addition to the surveyors' toolkit. As coverage increases and costs drop, LIDAR datasets are becoming more applicable to medium and small scale projects where consistent and accurate topographic information is required. However, at the same time, pressure is increasing on surveyors to utilize LIDAR as a replacement to conventional acquisition of data in the field.

This seminar, presented by Dr. Robert Radovanovic, P.Eng., A.L.S., C.L.S. seeks to provide an overview to how aerial LIDAR is captured and processed, and provide a guide to reliable use of this data set by the practitioner. Topics covered will include:

1. Overview of LIDAR Capture and Processing
2. Creation of "Bare-Earth" and "Derived" LIDAR Data Sets
3. Knowing your LIDAR: Importance of Metadata, Projections and Geoids
4. Avoiding Pitfalls: Field Verification and QA/QC of Third Party Data Sets
5. Realistic/Effective Use of LIDAR Data and Complying with the MSP
6. Beyond Aerial LIDAR and Towards Terrestrial Laser Data Sets - Sample Projects
